How to Maintain Your Exterior House Paint

Writer • July 6, 2021

As a homeowner, you’re likely always looking to save money wherever you can. The reality is that investing in your home’s exterior paint up front will save you a lot of money down the road. If you put off this project for too long, it will become far more difficult and more expensive to address. Let’s look at our leading exterior maintenance tips that will keep your house looking beautiful.

Landscaping

You might not realize it, but the landscaping surrounding your house can have an impact on the condition of the exterior paint. The biggest issue is that you need to keep the house as dry as possible. When the house is wet, this can result in the growth of mildew and mold, while also attracting pests.

However, keeping the landscaping well maintained will help you avoid many of these problems. Trim and prune all the shrubs, trees and bushes surrounding the home. This will allow in more sunlight and keep the home dry.

Another thing to check is any sprinkler systems—if the house is constantly being sprayed with water, this will be an issue. Lastly, you want to make sure any piles of leaves or debris are collected away from the home.

House washing

Washing your home does more than just make it look good. It can also extend the life of the home’s paint job. Washing rids the house’s exterior of contaminants like pollen, dirt, mildew, mold, bird droppings and more. This keeps the house looking fresh and prevents the paint from deteriorating.

You can do house washing with a scrub brush or a sponge. It’s best to use a soft-bristled scrub brush with a long handle, along with soapy water. Use the brush to gently scrub the home, then rinse it with a garden hose.

Another option is pressure washing, although even if you own a pressure washer, it’s usually best to hire a professional for this work. That’s because this equipment can be hazardous when used improperly.

Touch-up painting

The paint on some parts of your home will deteriorate more quickly than on other parts. That’s due to additional sunlight or wind exposure combined with other factors. Check around the home periodically—once every year or two—to see which parts need a little love.

In between exterior paint jobs, it’s important to do some touch-up painting. This simple task can extend the life of your home’s exterior while keeping your property looking great. While you can do this yourself, you may want to hire a professional who will get the job done right every time.
